Yes, you read it right...it's a singing road. I ran across this little clip and meant to post it a long time ago but it apparently slipped my mind...too many penguins on the iceberg...I guess.
This road or freeway is actually in Korea. We had heard about it and how cool it was and were even given the general location of it but were never able to actually find it. We were on our way back to Osan from Incheon airport after our super-way-cool trip to Thailand before we left Korea. As it happens we stumbled or drove over it totally by accident. So, as I said, we knew about where it was but hadn't figured out that you had to be in the inside lane for it to actually sing. It was exciting as we went over it and we thought, how fitting it was that we found it on our very last trip back to the base. We pulled over to the side of the road and decided that we had to get it on video...we would NEVER get another chance to do this. Since we were on the freeway we knew that there was only one way that we would be able to get another chance at it and that was to put the car into reverse and back up the half mile or so on the shoulder of the road to where it started. Well, it turned out to be almost a mile, I think.
We repositioned ourselves and got up to speed right before we hit it again. This time I was all ready with my camera.
If you look at the road you can see that they made grooves in the road, which, depending on the space between the grooves produces a certain pitch as your tires roll over it. It also works better at higher speeds which may be the reason that they put it on the freeway. Pretty cool!

That is hilarious. A good one for the video tape. Loved it.
That's crazy. They actually have one of those in Palmdale/Lancaster (north boondocks area of Los Angeles). I saw a news report for it. It had been made for a car commercial. But after the commercials some locals complained, so they changed it. Then more locals complained and I guess that put the singing road back. I haven't driven it, so that's cool you did and heard it. Hope all is well in England.
I just saw a commercial on TV with one of those roads.
That's awesome! Bet there aren't a lot of singing roads in England?
