Dachau Concentration Camp

We went to the Dachau concentration camp where lots of people were imprisoned, tortured and killed. This place was very stark and eerie. Someone even pointed out that even the birds won't fly over let alone land in this place.

We took all of the kids and steered the younger ones away from the things we did not want them to see. We felt, however, that important for the older ones to see this place. They have made it into a Memorial so that the world can see it and what happened...in the hopes that we will NEVER let something like this happen again. You read about this in the history books and it seems distant...not real...but visiting a place like this makes it "real".

The camp was built to house 6,000 but at it's height it had more than twice that many people. Dachau was liberated by U.S. Forces in 1945. The people in the town of Dachau knew about the camp but had no idea about the inhumanity that went on within the fences. After the liberation of the camp U.S. Forces made the towns people come and look at the crematorium and other places. They were horrified.

We felt that after visiting such a depressing place we needed to lighten things up a bit. So, we put a fun dvd into the machine in the car and hit McDonalds on our way back to the hotel. We then went swimming and to the dinner buffet.

Wow Tam! Those pictures gave me chills, I can't imagine the feeling you got from being in such a horrific place. Glad you had the opportunity to take the kids, important part of history.
